Meet our first-ever Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award winner from The Prince’s Trust Awards 2022!

Tanzila Khan is an inspirational women’s rights activist, entrepreneur, and student from Pakistan. Selected by Amal Clooney in recognition for her remarkable work to increase women’s access to menstrual, pregnancy, and reproductive health products through her company @girlythings.pk

Portland’s National Period Day Rally

On the 19th of October 2019, the youth of Portland started a series of rallies in the area. These rallies focused on the topic of period poverty throughout the country which has started to become a very serious issue for girls in the USA.

Girlythings’ CEO Tanzila Khan also attended the march and showed her utmost support for the fighters of period poverty. Being one to raise awareness of such issues in her own country, she saw fit to extend the help overseas as well. She represented not only Girlythings but also the large community working in Pakistan.

One of the most widely known problems in the American community is the lack of available menstrual supplies or their extremely high cost. This leads high percentage of period poverty in the country. The protesters rallied to raise awareness of the issue and to demand that it is addressed immediately.

By participating in such activities, Girlythings hopes to make women feel supported not only in Pakistan but all over the world.

Launching M Power. A Hygiene and Leadership Program for Women

Girlythings.pk Launches M Power. A hygiene and leadership program for young girls to kick-start their leadership by taking care of their health, hygiene, beauty, and confidence. Roadshow begins at Garrison Academy for Girls which is also Founder Tanzila Khan’s own school. The team will continue to visit major schools in Lahore. Each session is conducted through a presentation and group discussion. Topics include myth-busting, hygiene management, diet, and more. We need a world where women are leaders and better equipped with the knowledge, skills, and a vision. Let’s start with health.

Road show at Faiz Festival

Among Faiz’s poetry and portraits adorned at the fifth International Faiz Festival, one of the highlights of the 3 days-event was Tanzila Khan’s Girly Things stall that was set up to raise awareness on menstrual hygiene.

The appreciative audience including celebrities from the likes of Sarmad Khoosat and Khadija Siddiqui were all praised for this one-of-a-kind initiative in Pakistan, working to inspire and aware women about menstrual hygiene and its importance. The activist, entrepreneur, and writer Tanzila Khan was also a panelist in the session on “Art over Adversity: Who Wins”.

A one of its kind application in Pakistan; Girlythings is an App catering to women’s menstruation needs. The App has managed to make hygiene products and sanitary napkins easily accessible to women all around Pakistan, delivering products at their doorstep in complete privacy.

GIRLYTHINGS wins World Summit Awards 2018

Girlythings was nominated as the best national digital solution for Pakistan for the international World Summit Awards (WSA). The World Summit Awards are a global initiative selecting digital innovations making a positive impact on society. With this nomination in the Category Health and Well-being qualifies for evaluation among over 400 international projects by the WSA Jury 2018. 

About Girlythings

Girlythings is a mobile application that delivers sanitary products to women with and without disabilities through monthly subscriptions and emergency kits in public. It also delivers a daughter’s starter kit for girls before they start. But that is not it. We are the first ever product delivery system for women that aims to eliminate payment altogether. Our user earns peridots by giving capacity-building quizzes on the App along with feedback quizzes for our partners. We publish the data of the quiz to call for change in services, policies, and products. It’s like meeting the demands of women, sharing their voice, and encouraging safe products for even those who can’t afford them.

“I salute my entire team who came together to make this solution a reality for me and others like me. I was born with a disability in Pakistan. It was not easy realizing the challenges of being a female and having a disability. But this was also an opportunity for me to understand problems and come up with solutions. Even as a strong confident girl on the wheelchair I was unable to buy pads or other personal products because of shops not being accessible. I thought of women in villages and areas where there are no shops.”

Over the years I realized our mothers, sisters, and friends can use applications on phone rather than access a website easily. So, we decided to bring help right into their palms. Making the monthly time a time of joy and eliminating money from it. The initiative is basic but solves a large problem for women and men.”

The WSA nominees 2018 show the richness, diversity, and innovation of digital solutions on a global scale and prove how digital technology can improve society in each corner of the world. The WSA 2018 nominees will be evaluated based on seven fundamental criteria: Content, Functionality, Design, Technology, Innovation, Impact, and Global/UN value.

Each year, WSA nominees are selected by the WSA National Experts from more than 180 UN member states. The WSA National Experts nominate up to eight projects for each country – one for every WSA category.

A nomination to the WSA hence is already an award in itself – the qualification to compete and be presented on an international level and being the best practice in Health and Well-being nationally.
